January 23, 2008 -- The recent UTEP study provides a number of solid economic reasons to oppose Asarco's reopening. Here are just two. First, the study includes a survey of residents throughout the region which proves that among people who have an opinion about Asarco, a clear majority of folks are opposed to its reopening, regardless of their age, gender, education, or distance from the smelter. No surprise there. But, the greatest opposition, notably, comes from El Paso's young, well-educated 18-35 year olds, the very ones we are trying to keep in our community because they are the entrepreneurs, the dreamers and the hard workers who will create tomorrow's high-paying jobs. If Asarco were to reopen, they would be among the first to flee the city and its deteriorating quality of life. We don’t need a polluter in our midst who will add to the brain drain; quite the contrary. Second, the study compared the direct and indirect wage income produced by a fully operating Asarco versus ADP, one of the local businesses which has chosen to relocate here and expand operations at least partly because quality of life is important. ADP, the report shows, currently puts more wage income into the El Paso economy than Asarco ever would, and none of the pollution. We can have jobs and clean air. Please let Gov. Perry know you oppose Asarco, and come to the TCEQ hearing n Austin on Feb. 13.
