City Leaders Speak Out Against Asarco's TV Commercial

October 05, 2007 -- City leaders have been very vocal of their opposition to Asarco’s plans to reopen its smelter and have spent upwards of a million dollars to convince the state to deny Asarco a new air permit. On Friday city leaders have taken issue with a new Asarco television commercial, implying that the City of El Paso is spending 10,000,000 dollars to fight Asarco. The city claims it has only spent 5,300 dollars to sway public opinion against Asarco, citing that Asarco would pollute the city. Another 992,000, the city claims has been spent on legal council for fighting the air permit.
