March 23, 2007 -- If ASARCO's smelter is permitted to reopen, it will be given a 10 years license to once again emit serious contaminants into the atmosphere at the rate of 7,925 tons of pollutants per year, which can result in serious health problems for El Pasoans. The chart below shows the contaminants ASARCO will be allowed to emit into El Paso's air if the permit is granted.
