ASARCO Defeated In Second Try To Stop The Hearings In El Paso

By: GTLO Staff

March 14, 2005 -- On March 11th, 2005 an Austin judge once again voted in favor of the people of El Paso. After the second decision against ASARCO’s ongoing efforts to stop the permit renewal hearings in El Paso, the El Paso Times quoted the ASARCO attorney as saying, “We’re considering an appeal, but ultimately ASARCO may conclude that the best course is to proceed with the hearing [in El Paso]”

Asked about the change in tone in this most recent statement, GTLO member Rollyn Carlson said, “I don’t know if this is just a savvy PR (public relations) move or if they really do see that the El Paso public is demanding the issues of ASARCO’s soil contamination, compliance history, and air pollution be discussed before any permit is renewed.”
